you sign up on the website. they have branches in san antonio otherwise it's done all online and via phones. their insurance is top notch and banking is great too. i use their investment funds, credit cards, car loan, and booked a cruise with them last year.

they also refund atm fees so i don't give a shit where i travel

Yep, but only up to 10 withdrawals a month. After that it is $2/transaction. I found out the hard way :eek3:

That is what I use at the ATM machine. If I buy something at a store and do a cash withdrawal its different.

Their insurance sucks balls and is overpriced. I saved about $400 a year switching to State Farm, and actually have a local agent to talk to when shit gets fucked up.

I've heard great things about their banking, ie: checking/savings/loans.

But also beware! They KNOW how the military works. If you owe them money, and are so much as a month behind on your bill, they WILL contact your first sergeant, and you WILL be screwed. I know this from personal experience. My payment on my old Mastercard through them was a whopping 5 days late, and my shirt already knew, and I was in the office standing tall. When I showed him my check register, and the statement, he could not believe they wasted the time to get him all worked up with me not even being 30 days late. So be prepared for pain if you are a little late.

I dropped them the next day. All accounts closed, insurance cancelled. When they asked me why I was closing I simply stated.."I really don't enjoy having my ass ripped for no reason because my bank and insurance company sucks a big fat moose cock." And I politely hung up the phone. Fuckers are still trying to get me back. No thanks, I'll stick with the Credit Union.

Their insurance rates factor in your credit rating. Bad credit = high insurance $$.

On another note, I thought that they had 24 hour telephone support for banking. I tried to contact them the other day and it was a no-go. :dunno:

But when you're in the high 700's with no accidents or tickets then there should be no way State Farm should beat them. But they did, by a lot. And I personally don't like using companies with military ties. No Star card, no club card, nothing. Too easy for them to screw your life up with one simple mistake or oversight. Know what I mean?

You should try Navy Federal if you can. A buddy of mine just refinanced his truck from USAA's 9.19% to NAvy Fed's 5.25%.

I only got stuck in that situation when I got to Okinawa. Everything I needed here had to be paid for in Japanese yen, or USD and the check card would only allow me to take out $600 at a time. I had to front $5000 before my DLA had gone through 2 months later and thats why I went over my 10 ATM transactions per month. The random $20 withdrawal didn't help either, but at the time I didn't know that there was a limit on free ATM withdrawals.

On that note www.etrade.com has a checking account with unlimited free ATM transactions. I have them for my savings account because their interest rate is higher than USAA's, but I've considered them for my checking as well. Just not sure if I would be giving up any USAA freebies later on though. Anyone have any input?

Oh...and is life insurance though USAA a bad thing? I am hoping to go through them for it, but if anyone has any other option for me that would be great.

Many companies are tying the price of insurance to your credit rating.
USAA is a good company to do business with, but if State Farm is cheaper for you, then just get insurance through SF, and bank through USAA.

I pay all of my bills through USAA, and I love how I can deposit a check using my scanner.
