My steering wheel has gotten pretty ugly. It's like whatever was on there has started to degrade. Living in an ocean climate, it's thicker air, and I can tell this espeically in the mornings and after rain. When I hold the steering wheel a while, it almost feels sticky, and leaves a residue on my hands.

Is there any way to clean this a bit? It almost feels like there's something caked on. Hot water work? Or is there something better out there to use?

The detailing edu has product recommendations for cleaning.

With steering wheels, it is best to spray the cleaning solution onto the brush or towel and not the steering wheel (due to cruise control, stereo controls, etc). Spray, scrub, wipe dry.

If your steering wheel is NOT leather wrapped, you might give a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser a shot. Otherwise, do as Scottwax says and consult the EDU thread.
