SRS Cigarette addiction lasts how long?

    So, I'm on my 23rd hour of no nicotone/cigarettes.

    I've quit ONCE before, but I don't remember the cravings ever going away. Whn I quit the first time, I think I only lasted a few months before I started smoking again...but my question is -

    Does the craving ever fully go away? I've heard from people who have quit, that like a week after they quit or whatever, they'll try a cigarette and be completely repulsed and disgusted by it. After a week, for me, I still want a damn cigarette!

    Is there ever a point where I won't ever want a cigarette? I know I can quit for a few months, but I get scared that after a few months I'll end up smoking one and getting addicted again...then months of work, down the drain :(

    Hey man,

    I a quitting too. Well i have not smoked for like 3 months, Minus a few drunken moments. I still have cravings everyonce in a while. They got fewer and farther between, and may not happen for days. But if i go to a party, or a bar where people are smoking, i still want one. that is why i say i am quitting. untill i can say that i hav absolutly no craving for them....the i can say i have quit!

    That is my main concern also. I moved out of state to somewhere I didn't know anybody, and that was the reason I was bale to quit. Now that I have met new people (smokers/drinkers), I've also turned 21 recently...it's a whole lot harder to quit!

    Is there ever a point where you've gone a full week without even THINKING about cigarettes?

    I've quit for up to 3 years before starting again. The addiction lasts a very long time but dealing with it gets easier over time.

    AGH man im in such a bad mood :p everythign is pissing me off...i am an avid madden and halo player, but i quit both as soon as i lost 1 game.

    As far as I know it never really fully goes away completely. I think if you haven't smoked for several years you may get a craving like twice a year if you're lucky, and it's much less intense than in the beginning. I think I'm going to give it a try here soon again. It sucks too, cause I can get down to like 1-2 cigarettes a day without much of a problem (even though I use to smoke half a pack a day for a couple years) .... but quitting completely is so much harder.

    I gave in and smoked 3 cigs tonight :(

    I try and blame it on being drunk...but when I think about it, I think I got drunk to smoke a couple cigs :(

    Trying again tomorrow.

    in what units would you like me to tell you how long cigarrette addiction lasts? seconds? aeons? years? minutes? come on, you want a specific answer you at least have to tell me how you want it.

    THat is me right there... I never used to smoke that much but the past 6 months I've been smoking only 1-2 a day except days that I go drinking...


    I'm just tired of it running my life (sounds ghey but it's true when you think about it) after 4 years... I never told my parents and they never found out, so I would have to walk my dogs for a while to have a smoke if I was at home, and if I went out I had to wait 30 mins between my last cigarette and going home, so the smell wouldn't be too strong on me.


    I just keep telling myself cigarettes are for the weak who get stuck on it and don't have control over themselves, and that's fine if they want to do it... when I see them smoking it shouldn't make me want one, it should make me happy I don't have one in my hand. By not smoking I'm tougher, and more in control of myself.

    If you just wanna quit for health reasons, it will be a lot harder... For me it has to be about lifestyle and ability... hense seeing them as a weakness. I've only been smoke-free for 2 days so far (it's been 4 years, and although i've had breaks from it, I've never actually intended on quitting completely until now), but it isn't too difficult... before I could go a few days or even weeks without one because I knew I'd satisfy the craving when I felt like it... now I don't have that, but I'm doing okay.

    I recently stopped again for health reasons (about 3 weeks ago with one time cheating in the middle). I wasn't getting sick or anything but my lungs were getting sore after I smoked a cigarette. Even with that sort of motivation it's incredibly difficult. Even now, 3 weeks later, I am dealing with serious cravings issues that are affecting how I think and act. It's really, really bad. I try to tell myself that I'm better off w/o it and that I should be happy that it's easier to breathe and that I can now run a mile or two without stopping for air. That doesn't really help much though.

    I also won't smoke around my parents and am going to see them this weekend so I'll probably try not to smoke anything this week. However, I am worried about myself when I get back. NYC apparently offers free nicotine patches/gum for like 3 or 4 weeks for anyone who wants to quit so I might try that if I'm still like this when I get back. I had an uncle die of emphysema and a grandmother die of lung cancer so I know it's in my best interest to quit :hs:

    Yeah... the fact that I actually watched my Grampa in the hospital strugglnig with emphasyma (I don't think he smoked when he developed it, I'm not sure because he never smoked around us when we were there, but I can vaguely remember him smelling a little like cigarettes sometimes... I was only 7 or 8 when he died) a day before he died... it was pretty horriffic. Even then, and knowing how much it would crush my mom if she found out I smoke regularly, I had no motivation to quit.

    This will sound really really lame, but I've been watching a shitload of kung fu and asian movies and seeing all the 1337 ass kicking buddhist priests who have complete control of themselves and other people who do the same, it's kind of inspiring... I've always wanted to be in total control like that, so after reading some buddhist stuff I really got into the whole self-control philosophy and now want what my mind wants to rule my body.

    Plus it will help me in my conditioning for muay thai and just overall being healthier... To me, like many other people, the threat of cigarettes coming back to bite me in the ass when i'm much older isn't that scary. This is why I said if you're quitting for health reasons it will be harder, because most smokers undermine that fact in the first place so they don't really have respect for what it means. I think it's up to people to want to grow out of the phase I guess, like I am doing right now.

    I just want to stop buying cigarettes and being dependent on them... Maybe I'll have one or two on nights that I drink, but if having the nicotine in my system the next day when I'm sober makes me fiend for a cigarette then I won't even smoke any when drinking or in social situations... I'll cut them out of my life completely if I have to in order to achieve what I want. Right now I'm on day 3 and not even thinking about cigarettes except discussing it on OT for a little motivation/strength.

    Yeah my grandfather died when I was young but I had a grand/great-uncle who was basically my surrogate GP. He died of emphysema from smoking and I watched him deteriorate. He smoked into his 40s. It was awful to watch and as I get older I know the amount of damage my body will tolerate gets smaller and smaller. I try to think of him when it gets bad but I wind up telling myself something retarded like "I'll just kill myself if I get that".

    That's a great idea. One of my buddies was into kung fu for a while and didn't smoke then started again after he quit. I'm thinking of trying to get into some sort of heavy physical activity this summer to give me something to do and a reason to stop. I got big into frisbee in grad school (it was a hippie town) so I am going to try to find some sort of ultimate frisbee league in town. I need to practice but it would be nice.

    Yeah see for me I've been having some issues with my g/f of 3 years and it's just not the best time to give up an emotional crutch. I was fake-smoking straws all day at work today :o. I have been pretty good about not smoking while drinking but I know it's going to be rough for the rest of the week. We'll see what happens. I am going to go on a mini-vacation with my parents this weekend and I won't smoke around them (they both smoked at my age and quit, now they run marathons) so starting up again so soon before going down there would be a stupid idea.

    On the contrary, if you quit while in need of the crutch, and become strong enough to not need it in times of strong desire, you'll find it much easier to go without them on normal days as well. My problem was that I never really wanted to quit until I found solid motivation or saw some signs of physical harm done by them. I reccomend you just stay off them from this point on. If you have a pack throw it away, and make sure you throw away your lighters too (i put my zippo's in my closet buried under a bunch of shit). They say those that smoke alot have the most trouble with the physical addiction. Mentally you can do it, you just have to really want to stop. Just know that smoking is no longer an option in your life. Instead of thinking "what if I went to the store and picked up a pack... oh that would be so great right now," you should be more in the mindset of "I can overcome my body's will to have nicotine because my mind is too powerful to let my body tell me what to do. My mind does not want to smoke cigarettes, therefore I will not."

    lol funny shit, I broke up with my girlfriend yesterday!


    That on top of finals and I'm still happy without cigarettes on day 4. The cravings seem a little stronger than before, but I'm still not getting them that often and as long as I keep my mind focused on what I truly want I have no trouble shakin em. :)

    The worst is being around friends that smoke. Patches and gum never worked for me or my friends. I suggest herbal mint toothpicks (I got mine from whole foods). They keep your mouth and fingers occupied; the cravings, for me, come from a lack of having that stick in my mouth, and the missing sensation of that cool feeling of holding that phallus between my pointer and middle finger.
    And stay away from friends that smoke. For me, half the battle is environmental influence.

    I have tried to quit smoking so many GD times...tried the patch, the gum, medication, exercise, candy, chewing a toothpick, ack! My lungs are screwed...I have this wheeze...I have PICTURES all over my house/office of diseased lungs. My Boss (a reformed 3 pack a day smoker) tells me I look pathetic standing outside in the pouring rain puffing away...I've been to Smoke-Enders, seminars by the Cancer Society, accupuncture, hypnosis, had a quit kit, my house stinks of cigarette smoke, my dentist yells at me b/c my teeth are yellow...
    I did quit smoking for 4 months after I had brain surgery back in '91...that lasted until a friend came to visit with a pack of Lucky Strikes...
    Quite frankly, it's getting to the point where I am almost embarrassed to be a smoker...you know..."one of those..."
    What to do? I wish I knew.

    You've got the motivation to quit. All you need is the confidence, which you may have too. All you have to do is combine them. Perhaps reform your entire lifestyle so that your frame of mind is just different. Eat healtheir, get exercise, and quit smoking. That way it would be a reform in your frame of mind rather than just being a reform of routine.

    I just convinced myself (or, IMO, stopped denying reality) that smoking is an ugly and weak thing to do. I used to think it represented toughness or "downness", as in less "square" type of thing... but this really isn't true, and it's for those who aren't strong enough to go on without it controlling them once they've started.

    I just started chewing nicorette. Every so often I will have a piece. I've been upping my gum over time and decreasing cigs. Seems to work, i'll often not even crave a cigarette for a few hours after the gum.

    Been officially 31 days here. It's so easy for me to not smoke when I'm at school and etc now. The only thing that really has effected me by quitting is walking my dogs. My family walks them too but I used to di it every day. Usually everyone else is too busy and they only get walked once every couple days (big dogs, so they need exercise outside of the house). This is when I used to smoke or what I'd do to sneak out of the house and grab a smoke. I haven't done it once in the last month, and I think I'm going to force myself to start walking them now. That way I can help conquer the addiction by getting used to doing everything that I used to smoke during, only without smoking anymore.

    Eventually I'll quit smoking when I drink. THat will be hardest, and cold turkey is still IMO the best way to quit. Easing yourself off like I'm doing is harder.

    I havent smoked for 4 years or so now- but still when I'm out for a couple drinks that temptation is there. I just think about the hungover cigarette smell that I grew to hate, and that gets me by for the night

    I just started up smoking again after 2 weeks off, damn alcohol! Everytime I drink I start smoking again. I've come to the realization that the only way I can quit is if I stop drinking. How the hell am I going to stop both :confused:

    I has a boss who quit and could never stop talking about smoking, it was like he was rationalizing his decision to quit to himself all the time, he quit 18 years ago!

    First of all, to all of you who are trying to quit smoking, let me say CONGRATS!!! Smoking addiction is a lifelong thing, I haven't smoked in 4 1/2 yrs. and there is still times when I get really strong cravings. I even think that if I could just smoke one, I'd be alright. But I haven't given in because I know myself better than that! To quit smoking is so very very hard, you have to be ready emotionally. You can't just say "ok, i'm gonna quit right now". You have to be ready to really give them up. And if you slip up and smoke a few, just jump back on the wagon and start over. I guarantee you will feel 100% better once you've quit. All your senses start coming back; your smell, the taste of food is much better. I still love the smell of a freshly lit cigarette. So, the answer to your question is: the cravings don't ever completely go away, but it gets easier every day. You can do it!!! It just takes some willpower. Good luck! :bigthumb:
