say theoretically you wanted to toss chicken breasts out the window and consume protein shakes for 6 meals a day, w/vegges and your normal carbs/fats, how would it differ? just an interesting topic

I'd just get sick of shakes.

    pros of shakes
-can consume lots of grams of protein (used by the body or not) in a single session or day
    -quick

    pros of chicken
-can flavor them whichever you feel like for the meal
-goes well with various carb sources

I hate chicken breasts. I make them so bland but not much choice now that I'm cutting.

The outside has good taste, inside, it's sooooo bland.

i want to do the exact opposite, no shakes. just raw veggies, chicken, and oats, maybe a sweet potato.

i always wondered this too. Does your body absorb the same amount of protein from a shake as it does from real food? It seems to me i always make better gains when i replace my shakes with real food.

Been doing this for 3 weeks.

No whey, all protein comes from solid food sources.

My overall protein intake is definitely lower, but I'm not as hungry.
I'll probably start taking whey again soon, just doing a little experiment.

    I wouldn't imagine so.

As long as you use both whey and casein for different times of the day.
There are many vegetarian BB'ers and strength athletes that get most of their protein from beans, pastas, dairy, and protein powders.
And they seem to make gains.

I would think you'll be pissing out a lot of excess protein though.

i don't think you can piss out excess protein, it's not like a vitamin, doesn't it just get converted to something else if it's not used up? i might be wrong though

reason i ask is because i woke up sick yesterday morning, i think its a minor cold, but today when attempting to stick to my diet, i was so tired of cardboard-like chicken and oats, i puked it all up :( all ive had was shakes today with blueberries/natty pb. great start to my competition diet

It's strange that you threw up just from a cold... but when I get a cold I get off my diet for a couple days. Eating super clean and low carb just makes you feel like shit even worse. If a cold comes on heavy I load up on tons of carbs, fats, veggies, and fruit with every chance my appetite allows.

You wouldn't "literally" piss out protein (assuming your kidneys are functioning at 100%) but the conversions of protein in the body create excess waste which can cause more frequent and intense urination. I figure with 6 shakes a day he'll be getting in a lot of protein that cannot be used as protein and thus converted with the biproduct of tons of urinary waste.

Meaning, I don't think it most of it will get used and cause him to pissing constantly.

If I'm sick dairy will cause insane amounts of mucus and phlegm. But I'm a special case due to sinus problems.

Shakes will have less thermic effect and will cause greater insulin spike leading to more fatigue and likely more hunger.

Add some ground turkey to the mix and that's exactly what I'm doing right now.

Pat, what about switching to seafood? Seriously i haven't eaten chicken in months, and today was a perfect reminder why. Fucking nasty

Tilapia, White Ruffy, Orange Ruffy, Shrimp, Salmon..tuna (that's kinda nasty too but still easier than chicken). Seriously there so many sources of fish..or do you not like fish?

Btw since were talking about protein, i'm hoping someone (ceaze) has an answer to this.

I've read a while ago that the body cannot digest more than 25 (or maybe it was 50) grams of protein at a time from shakes, and it's much better to spread them out through the day as 1 scoop servings instead of doing like 2 or 3 scoopts at a time..i think Kane or someone else disproved it, but i can't even remember anymore. Is this true?

    I'm talking about whey protein

rate is about 30g per hour on avaerage, thats why you take your shake or whatever with fiber or carb to delay the digestion
