Picked up Mobo, CPU, Ram and heatsink on ebay as package (apparently pulled from a 3 month old system). $300 shipped

Ordered rest of the parts from newegg (except for video card and HD) $150 shipped

    Not bad for $450 :coold:

:o yea I know it's not much of a gpu. I never play any games though...I might occasionally watch some HD video clips every now and then (like the HD movie trailers on apple.com :coold:)

How would I benefit from a beefier gpu :dunno:

You probably won't. I was rocking a X1650 up until about a month ago. Replaced it with am HD3650 and I don't notice any difference.

HD video is mostly handled by the CPU, unless you're using something to specifically offload it to the GPU.

    q6600 is old and busted
you could probably have squeezed in a q9550 for around $500 budget

Maybe. But 300 for all that is way better than the 220 or so the 9550 costs.

That's what I figured....I may have even gone w/ onboard video if I wasn't worried about compatability w/ OSX86 :noes:.

The only thing I can think of that's ever really given me any trouble is videos like this. (1080p H.264). And that's not a super high priority to me anyway :o

:o was considering it....but yea, I found the Q6600 w/ a nice mobo (that was OSX86 compatible), 8GB ram plus a nice heatsink all for $280 I jumped on it.

What exactly makes the Q6600 "Old and Busted"? :dunno:

    nah, its fine.

it's just that i feel you could have done better since there's a microcenter near my area and the Q9550 is only $169.99 there

Try an E8500 processor, they rock and more cores is not necessarily better. I'd look at upgrading the video card too, there are a lot of choices out there ATI is a good way to cost costs..
