    i've nver really looked at the 17-55 before, but it gets some nice reviews.

    too bad the 24-70 doesn't have IS. i'd definitely buy it right now otherwise.

    IS is meh at the focal lengths we are talking about.. You can compensate with shutter speed and canons awesome high ISO handling.

    That 17-55 is notorious for having issues with dust creeping in to the lens constantly.. apparently the seals suck or there is some design flaw... that and the 24-70 will beat the shit out of it in terms of sharpness and general quality... EF L Glass > EF-S

    true, and since i already have a 10-22 & a 70-200, it just makes more obvious sense to me to get something that fits right in the middle (24-70), versus something (17-55) that overlaps quite a bit (on the wide end, especially), but still leaves a gap (probably not much of a noticiable gap, but a gap nonetheless)

    i don't have any plans to ditch the 40D for a fool frame, but who knows. it already sucks knowing i'd have to get rid of the 10-22. :o
