So, I got an LCD for Xmas. I was really into Battlefield 1942 Desert Combat mod a couple years ago. I want to play Battlefield 2. What is the cheapest machine that will play it at a decent frame rate at 1280 x 1024 resolution? I can build it.

AnandTech.com's review shows them using an AMD FX-55 and 1GB of 2:2:2:8 RAM. Running 6800GT got around 62.6fps 1280x1024x32 Medium settings No AA/AF, and around 45.5 with High settings 4xAA No AF.
The ATI X800 XL was at 62.5 and later at 52.
Lastly the 6600GT was at 49 and later at 29.8

FiringSquad.com got slightly better results with the same cards but they were also using an AMD Athlon 64 4000+ and 1GB OCZ DDR400 SDRAM

As for how much it would cost, that depends on where you shop and what exactly you want to go for.

3200+/6800gs would be the lowest i would go for a quality 1280X1024 experience. pick up an opteron 146 and overclock it to 2.6 (all of them can do this without breaking a sweat) and you will have fx-55 speeds.

I wouldn't go lower than that processor/card either.

I just built a new system w/ a 3200+, 2GB of Corsair XMS ram, ASUS A8N-E MB, and an evga 7800GT GPU. It rocks, and BF2 looks great on my 51" Toshiba HD TV :)

Total system cost was about $800, including a ThermalTake case w/ 430W PSU, and an oem packaged ASUS DVD-rom, plus my existing WD 200GB HDD I picked up for $90 last summer.
