I'm thinking about buying a new rifle, something a bit more useful than the sks. Its come down to either an ak or ar of course. Whats the lowest price available for rounds that would work well in a rra? Is steel junk like wolff functional? I'm sure the ak will have the advantage at like 12-13 cents a round when bought per thousand, but by how much?

i think it's like around 120 right now for 1k rounds of Wolf. your RRA should eat wolf fine. right now AK ammo isn't much different in price

Every were I looked lately 223 and 7.62 has been the same price so it comes down to what rifle you want more

meh 5.56 should do everything I need, plus I feel more comfortable with it in an urban environment

in that case the AK would be way cheaper, but I think there is more available so you can take an AR and make it different from the rest of them.

Is there even a wait on 5.56 like there is on 7.62x39? I know I can order a ton of ar mags for like $9 and get them?

I'm leaning toward the AR obviously and figure the sks can digest the 7.62 I have stocked ;)

5.45 mags are pretty readily available, both 5.45 and 7.62 arent easy to find in stock at the moment so neither has much of an advantage for availibility, well you can get the overpriced 7.62 stuff at wally world in stuff.

 I got both, prefer 5.45 for the accuracy, drums are nice with 7.62, hoping to eventually see some of the quad stack 5.45 mag's make it here though.

You plan on using your AR for self defense?

How does the 5.45 compare to the 7.62? (Besides the obvious things).

Well I'd rather not, but I wouldn't mind some sort of katrina-esque disaster long gun. The SKS weighs a ton and has low capacity. The 870 is slow to fire, slow to reload, doesn't penetrate vests..... An AR/AK just seems more versatile.

Gotta build a case for why you need to buy a gun right ;)
