I don't know too much about lenses so hopefully you guys can help me out. I need a fairly inexpensive macro lens for my Canon 40D. Any suggestions?

Screw in close up diopters are cheaper than buying a macro lens. They don't give you the versatility of a macro but they work.

    1. set kit lens to a small aperture
    2. hold DOF preview button and dismount lens
    3. hold the front of the lens on the body's lens mount
    4. move the camera back and forward to find focus

I would take an extension tube over diopter filters or a reverse mount.

Good point. Keep in mind that he's looking for an inexpensive solution. Also, reverse mounts don't give the flexibility of a couple of screw in diopters.
