rimfire pros - CHEAP!, almost no recoil, little noise
rimfire cons - low power, not reloadable, not a defensive round

centerfire pros - POWER!, noise, reloadable
    centerfire cons - price

Centerfire cartridges are generally safer than rimfire since a sharp impact on a rimfire cartridge base from almost any angle can detonate the primer, while accidental detonation of a centerfire primer is unlikely since it's generally slightly recessed in the center of a flat surface.
