I'm finally pursuing getting my CCW, and have been thinking about what would happen should I ever have to use it.

Are there lawyers out there who specialize in CCW incidents?

Anyone have a lawyer on retainer?

I too have often thought of this, but I don't know if you would really need to keep on on retainer. You're only going to use him in the even of actually having to use your gun in self-defense. Since he's not doing any work for you, I don't see the need for a retainer, just making sure you have a reliable attorney line up in the event you need to use him.

I guess I sort of have a lawyer or retainer. What I did and what I recommend people do is to research lawyers before hand. You want to have a short list of pre selected lawyers as this is something you want to avoid doing after a shooting.

My lawyer for a nominal fee started a file on me with a list of my contact info etc. If I were to be involved in a shooting he would contact key people such as my boss, my family, arrange bail, and make sure I am being treated fairly. He has other info such as background info on my competition shooting experience, my industry job, etc.

I have his number on speed dial on my phones. On a past incident I had to draw to stop a threat from a car theif, I called the lawyer before I called the cops to report the crime. Short story the lawyer is the first call if I am not in immediate danger after a firearms related incident.

I was trained that you should tell the cops no more than you were in fear for your life, and had to shoot the bad guy in self defense. Respectfully tell them that you intend to fully cooperate with them, but you need time to calm down, gather your thoughts, and consult w/ a lawyer to ensure your legal rights are maintained.

You shouldn't try to go into all kinds of details while you are still traumatized from the incident. Often times specific details won't come to you until you have a chance to calm down and gather your thoughts, and any fine details that change during the many rounds of questioning you will endure could possibly come back to haunt you in a criminal and/or civil trial.

If you take the "I don't have to tell you sh*t" attitude with them, then they will make sure that this will be a VERY unpleasant experience for you.

Lets clarify that a "retainer" is usually a monthly baseline payment for ongoing legal services... so unless you are shooting people with regularity you probably don't need an attorney on "retainer".

You just want to have a phone number for a good criminal defense attorney.

most lawyers will do a free consultation where you can find the info you need, get their info and a card, and explain that if God forbid something happened, they would be your lawyer. Maybe find one who is pro-gun

EDIT: thought I made a thread on here with this same issue, but maybe that was elsewhere

No real need in this state. I know lawyers and I guess if I needed one I could call one up but I don't think I will have to.

My understand, and I could be wrong, is that often people who go to jail (like this is your cell not, hey buddy lets talk) don't get their cell phones back for making calls (or even looking up numbers). Having a phone number in the wallet might be good backup.

If your in jail it's pretty much too late. They take your wallet too btw.

The idea is that after the shooting and you have determined that there is no longer a threat. That is when you call the lawyer, then you call the police.

So if it was a home defense shooting. You would make sure the threat is stopped. Next make a pot of coffee. You would then call the lawyer, drink the whole pot of coffee, get your story strait, make sure bad guy is completely bleed out at that point (one side of the story). Then you would call the cops. When the cops come you tell them you were afraid for your life, you are really shaken up, and your lawyer has advised not to say any more without his presence.

No, but I have a few phone numbers programmed into my phone. If anything ever happens I'll have a lawyer on the phone before the police even get there.
