So I was really looking to get a XD40 Subcompact for a carry gun. Then my buddy (who also carries) tells me he was looking at it, and it would be way too wide for a carry gun. What is OT's opinion on this gun, for carry? I currently have a SIG P226 (not for carry), how would it compare to this......width wise. :dunno:

I'm assuming the XD is a double stack mag, like the G26.

take a look at it, see for yourself.. if you think its too wide, take a look at a Kahr PM9, I believe its single stack if I recall correctly.

I was also looking at the Kahr MK40, kinda skeptical on the PM.

..........and my buddy who told me it would be too wide....carries a Kimber Ultra RCP II. So I guess anything other than that, is too wide for him. :dunno:

well a single stack 1911 is obviously going to be thinner than a double stack XD

I understand that.....but would it be that big of a difference?

eh, not too much, but you'd be able to tell if you're used to having a 1911 on your hip all day I suppose :dunno:

there are a lot of people that carry double-stack glocks and xd's on a daily basis, with the number going up and up every day..

they must be on to something.. go to the gun store, and stick it in your pants, see how it feels

Thats what I told him. I said "for you carrying the RCp for so long, yeah, its gonna be a wide gun"...........but for somebody who has never carried before, it would probably be fine. When I put my P226 in my IWB holster the width doesn't bother me, it's the length.

It's really a personal, body fit question, and holsters will play a big role in what's comfortable. Myself? I carry a 5" steel 1911 as often as I can, with a good holster and belt it carries almost as easily as my Makarov.

I don't think it'll be all that much more uncomfortable. It might be a little more prone to printing, but not so much I would worry about. But I sometimes IWB a p226 so ymmv.

FWIW my XD felt too wide and bulky to carry IWB, but my Kimber hi-cap (double stack .45acp) feels just fine .... go figure. :wiggle:

Unless you have a rare pistol.

"Steyr what? They make handguns? I thought they just made that auger or whatever?"

Love it. Fits my hand better than XD, Glock, or a 1911. Not too wide either, like the USP was. Only mod I'm planning is set of night sights. What the hell good is a gun you can only hit a target with during 12 hours of the day?. But 70 bucks for handgun sights? Its like robbery. :o
