Ok...we just moved into an apartment. There are cat 5 jacks all over the place and it is supposibly "wired". I have my computer setup to route the inet to other computers and if i just setup a crossover or go through a hub it works great. I can't figure out how to connect through the cat5 jacks though. Nothing I try seems to work.... :wtc:

There are two jacks in every face plate one is white and one is black. When I connect two systems on a black (one black in one room and one black in the other room) It won't work. But if I use a crossover on one computer and a normal cable on the other it will act like it is connected but can't get an ip or anything like that.

The whites don't work at all....Totally stumped. The wierd thing is I have a 10/100 in each computer but if I specify 100baseT instead of auto-detect it won't work at all....:dunno:

Anyone seen a apartment setup...is there something I am missing. I can't get ahold of my super but they might know something I don't. I can't find a router or anything in the closets....this is driving me fucking nuts.

They may have a hub in the janitor's closet. But who knows? Contact the apartment management and find out how it works.

Patch panel? Sweet! You'll probably need twice the number of patch cables, but it'll be a nice setup.

Yeah...we have about 7 connects for our 5 rooms...they all go to a wiring closet. Every connection goest to a rj45 in the wiring pannel. ...from there we have to put either a hub or a switch in.... It isn't too bad reallly.....it was pretty confusing til i found the pannel but after that it was money....ethernet in every room ....wh000t

6 rooms all with cat5 going to a single pannel...6 cat5 jacks inside the pannel .....so i am gonna have to put a 6 port hub in the closet and a cable going to each jack for my roomies....=/

Where I'm at it's considered a 'normal feature'...especially in the dorm-style apartment complexes.

:ugh2: Whats your definition of nice? What seemed to be a great deal all of a sudden fell through the floor.

We have 2000 sqft homes in this area that you could BUY for 1050 a month... I would find it VERY HARD to pay that for an apartment.

I currently pay 620 a month for 2/2 that is nearly 1250 sq ft with a 65' lanai and covered parking.

But to stay on topic. Uh. In home/residential automation and connectivity is my specialty. Enjoy it before it gets fawking expensive to buy and have installed!
