The rash of I got my permit posts, inspired me to ask this, with the holiday coming up.

This time of the year when we see friends and family that we have no seen it quite some time and without fail they all want to hug you.

So where and it what manner does everyone carry and how to you avoid being made? At least for me most of the family does not know and I prefer it stays that way.

I generally carry at 1 o'clock IWB. I attempt not to have it on me at large planned family gatherings, mostly because A) There are just way too many people that will try and hug you and its annoying enough as it is without trying to stop them from getting a pistol grip to the gut and B) Family gathering generally mean much more than 1 beer, so the gun gets left in the truck.

However it seems every has that one bubbly friend who will just come bouncing up out of nowhere, or that one aunt who drops by unannounced and is waiting for you when you come in to the door. I have to do either a weird hip turn to keep that that revolver butt away or that weird bend at the waist hug. I've gotten a few :squint: looks from weird hugs.

So how do the rest of y'all avoid being made?

I just pretend nothing happened. If you don't make a big deal out of it, they probably won't.

Another thing you need to think about is that unless this person is already a gunny or has a carry mindset, the first thing that they're going to assume is probably that they hit your pager/cell phone case/something of that nature.

Do a sideways hug with your strong side away from the other person. If they're about your height, go low with your arms to force theirs up. Plus, people tend to err "upward" in a hug, towards your armpits, as opposed to towards your ass.

usually when people hug me they either know i have the gun on ahead of time or i try to position myself so they wouldn't feel it - if they do happen to feel it, they don't say anything because nobody really thinks anything of it...to people you're friends with who don't know about guns, something hard on your belt generally doesn't cause suspicion

I'm happy that everyone I would hug knows I carry. That full-size 1911 doesn't hide itself.

With how tall I am people's arms usually go around my waist, I usually just don't hug people or if I do go for the side hug.

Same here, my entire family is completely gun friendly. As long as we don't play with them at the dinner table we are okay. lol

For those that would like to keep it a secret:

    - when you go in for the hug and you are carrying on your strong side, just make sure you have your arm low so it forces them to hug you high and they miss it.

    - if you are carrying something like presents or food as you'll likely do, carry it on your strong side and go in for the half hug on your weak side.

    - Reach out and give them the universal signal for a "dap" with your knuckles, lol kidding.

Try to have a massive erection the whole time. Make it really obvious. They won't notice the gun then.

Do the waist bend, but make it seem like you don't want to be hugging them, so you're only leaning in as much as you need to. Almost like a short person hug. That way, maybe they won't be too hot to hug you the next time either.

    lol

When you buy that revolver to spin around your finger like some Western fairy, do us a favor and make sure it's loaded.

also avoids that nasty busting into flames when you walk in the door bit, plus last time I was in a church I used free wireless internet to view the webpage for the church of the flying spaghetti monster, I'm sure if I ever go back the big man will want revenge.

I do not need to and if I am going to be drinking I make other arrangements for the gun. However A) You never know when you will need it B) I feel that the gun is more secure on my person than it is left in the truck, it seems my model and year of truck is one of those most stolen, but no one steals a stick shift. C) There is always that one family member that shows up randomly at your place. D) Family gathering doesn't mean back stuff stops happening, might have one of those crazy ex-lover christmases.

My GF's brother-in-law carries but he uses a fanny pack. :mamoru: He uses the darn thing for everything besides the gun too, still when I see he leaves it on the sofa or something at the GF's parents place (mother is an anti) I can't help but go :ugh: when the knee high adorable little hellions go scampering about, even if there is a good chance he left the gun out in the minivan.
