this is what it says on the package of whole wheat tortillas i just purchased. i never knew this, is it true?

it says each tortilla has 31g carbs & 21g fiber. theres a little note that says you subtract them and you get "10g of effective carbs" per tortilla.

on another note.. when i enter in these tortillas to fitday.com, fitday says the calories are wrong as per the package. the package says 200cal per tortilla, but fitday says it should actually be 113cal and it gives the equation for calculating calories  would "they" allow them to falsify the package with the wrong caloric content? i wouldnt be so concerned about it if it wasnt SO off...i mean its almost double from 113 to 200. i can be eating something else with those 87 calories that i'm not sure if i'm getting :hsugh:

it's not like there is 1 universal tortilla, and every tortilla in the world has the exact same caloric value. You go by what the package you have says. And yes, fiber is not digestible so it doesn't count towards the calorie content.

um, i know that bro. the tortillas i got arent on the fitday list of foods, so i entered it as a "custom" food. in doing that, it says that the calories dont calculate correctly based on the amounts of other stuff (fat, protien, carbs, fiber and alcohol). i just took the info from the package and entered it in the custom food labels and fitday says it cant be true..it has to be 113cal. and thats a BIG difference to 200..for me anyway. i'm trying to stick with 1500cal/day

so the grams of fiber are included in the total grams of carbs? and thats why you subtract them i guess? i'm just trying to understand.

ok i misunderstood what you were saying.

if you take that 21g of fiber x 4, that gives you 84 cals, which is where your difference is coming from.

    now i see.. thanks

so since the fiber isnt digestable, do you still count those 84 calories toward your diet?

I read in a nutrition book that we can digest some fiber. I'll look more into that.
