Next week me and a couple OTAPers are heading to Chicago for the auto show (thanks to a kick ass otter).

    Any tips or suggestions???

Since my girlfriend is not coming I would be stuck carrying the backpack I was thinking of only taking D90 (duh), Tamron 17-50, 35mm, and SB900. Pretty sure the macro 90mm, SB600, and 70-200 will be overkill. However, does anyone see any benefit to those? The only one I possibly could see is the 90mm but the 70-200 would be overkill.

I'd bring the tammy so you can get some wides and the 35 only. Wouldn't bother with a flash since the building should be lighted pretty good. It was at the Miami show and the cars had good light on them. I used a D300S and a 50mm and was good at about ISO 1000-1600 and it looks fine.

She bitched and moaned about how I never include her in any of my hobbies so I figured this way she can be included.

Actually she just started doing it out of the blue. We were at the aquarium and I put the backpack on the floor and she just grabbed it because she was scared someone was going to snag and run with it. I hope someone would because everything is insured and I want different stuff........

Considering the show is media coverage only and not consumer event full of people. I may be comfortable bringing some longer lenses. But I will primarily be shooting with my 50mm 1.4 and my 24-70 I think.

All with my 5-0mm from last year. Was a huge PITA to get the shots though.

Are you staying to Thursday or just coming in Wednesday? I am trying hard to make it up there on Wednesday morning but I have a meeting I need to attend that morning. Hoping it gets rescheduled.

I make my wife carry all my gear. :p It's kinda funny on location. She's got a backpack and dragging a wagon of stands and umbrellas, while I've just got my camera.

One question. Why do you need to take pics of cars at a car show? What will you do with them?

when I shot the NAIAS show, I used my 10-20 most of the time.

the chicago show is a ghost town during press days, so using a 70+ is pointless.

and take a flash. Some displays are pretty poorly lit.

And I dunno if there are any big reveals (I don't recall any this year) but if there are, grab those press kits. When they revealed the Challenger there a few years back, I flipped those kits for enough to pay for my trip.

If you are going Thursday and want to wander around I would be up for it. If you don't want to drag your SB-600 I could throw mine in the backpack. Good chance I will just end up dragging everything because I know the second I don't bring X I will be bummed.

Didn't get a press pass, but I can't wait to hit up the auto show this year. Got my a850 (go ahead flame on the sony), minolta 50 f1.4, and 28-75 f2.8 ready to go! Hopefully the night I go it isn't too crowded.

Not much going on right now. The field museum is pretty cool. You could easily kill a whole day there. Museum of Science and Industry is more of a hands on museum (good for entertaining kids and stuff). Navy Pier is pretty much a joke and a tourist trap. The winter months pretty much blow around here.
