Stable Mates: GM’s fresh round of compact trucks outrun the field

After more than two decades of service, GM is replacing its aging S-10/Sonoma pickup line this November with the all new GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado duo. GM’s redesigned compacts arrive in advance of redesigned small trucks from Toyota, Nissan and Dodge due in 2005.

GM not only beats them to the party, but brings an unexpected level of refinement for this class. Immediately evident is a substantial power boost over their predecessors, with new inline four- and five-cylinder engines based on the torquey 4.2-liter inline six introduced two years ago on midsize sport/utilities.

Steering feel improves with a switch from the old truck’s recirculating-ball system to a rack-and-pinion setup. GM also says this truck is significantly stiffer than its predecessor, and that it did a lot of work to cut vibration transmitted through the body and engine mounts. Three suspensions are available, Z85 heavy-duty, Z71 off-road and the Chevy’s ZQ8 sport model that offers aggressive steering rates, a two-inch-lower ride height, stiffer coil springs and high-pressure shocks. The Z85 two-wheel-drive models use stamped A-arms with coils over shocks in front; the four-wheeler’s torsion-bar front suspension raises it two inches. An off-road package available in both two- and four-wheel-drive models raises the body three inches over the base truck. Four-wheelers add a skid plate for more off-road protection.

The two inline engines, a 2.8-liter four and a 3.5-liter five, are smooth runners. The four makes 175 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque—55 hp and 45 lb-ft stronger than the 2.2-liter four it replaces. The extra power allows GM, for the first time in years, to offer a crew cab with four-wheel drive and a fuel efficient four-cylinder. Meanwhile, the 3.5-liter five produces 220 hp (vs. 180 hp in the 4.3-liter V6), outpacing the entire V6 small-truck field. Torque, rated at 225 lb-ft at 2800 rpm, takes a hit with the inline engine, falling 20 lb-ft short of the old V6’s peak.

The trucks have a modest 4000-pound maximum towing capacity, down from the previous model’s 5900 pounds. GM research suggests most compact pickup owners may pull a pair of jet skis or a snowmobile at most; those looking to tow more than two tons purchase full-size pickups. At the same time, maximum payload of 1733 pounds is up by nearly 400 pounds over the old models. Increases in wheelbase, overall length and height create 1.5 inches of extra legroom, and added head, shoulder and hip space.

Outside, the new trucks look tougher than the S-10 and Sonoma, with styling sculpted to match the full-size trucks with which they’ll share dealership space.

Colorado comes with a $16,200 base sticker for a two-wheel-drive regular cab; Canyon starts at $16,530. Prices increase to $18,545 for Chevy’s two-wheel-drive extended cab, $20,670 for two-wheel-drive crew and $23,230 for four-wheel-drive crews. GMC prices are about $300 higher across the board.

And the F150 continues to be the best looking truck sold in America.

I'm surprised rack-and-pinion has taken so long to be used.

It sounds pretty nice for those looking for a tiny truck.

    All new engineering
    Refined ride and handling
    Powerful and fuel miserly engines
    Pretty affordable
    Lots of configurations
    Very light curb weight

    Not bad.

Interesting that they are down by a ton of towing capacity and up by 400lbs of payload.

Trishield: did you see the maneuvering ford did to trick nissan over towing capacities? They lowballed their initial estimates, Nissan builds the Titan to beat those, and then ford announces the real number is 500lbs more than Nissans

  14. I think it'll do well competing against the Ranger and Tacoma.

i saw that on CNN last night while i was in bed.. but they reported it was horsepower or something..

i always thought that ford and nissan were buddies, since they shared cars kinda like GM is good friends with toyota.

In the small size trucks, That would be my choice. The Tacoman and Ranger are very outdated.

    Fraid not, but I wish.

More torque would have been nice... there's hope for the turbo I-5 that was in the Bel-Air concept. :yum:

Well, i'm not going to believe some stupid autoweek article over GM's literature.

I stand by my claim of a 4.2L in the Canyon.
