So I just had one of my buddys install a sub and amp. I decided to not change the head unit out right away as I didn't want to spend 11tybillion dollars right away. Will changing the head unit make that much of a difference? or am i good keeping the one I have. Probally going to have to change it to get better sound

The head unit right now is the pioneer one they put in cobalts.

Cliffs: had sub installed, is getting a new head unit going to make a difference?

    :x:

Did it come with RCA preouts or did you use a fm modulator (sp)? A aftermarket head unit would make your door speakers sound better with a lil more power i would guess, and have actual preouts to the amp and not a modulator would make the sub sound better also. Just a guess tho, im sure someone will chime in.

You don't use an FM modulator to connect an external amp.

I'd go for new speakers and an external amp to power them first. But it also depends on whether you want extra features like MP3 play too.

    What cars? Ferrari?

Anyway, yes your head unit matters. First you will hear an improvement simply with a better DAC when listening to CDs. Furthermore, a good aftermarket deck will have a higher noise floor, and provide a "cleaner" signal to the amplifier. The way I describe the difference between a good aftermarket deck and a bad one (or an OEM deck) is when you switch it's like a fog has been lifted.

Anyway, as far as brands go, I like Eclipse and Alpine personally. However, pioneer premiere and clarion are highly recommended by others.

there was a ford stx truck i saw with my own eyes, that had a "factory" din kenwood with rca outs. i say "factory", because i saw the ford blue oval stamp on the backside of the kit, and a kenwood to ford plug(with a shielded banana plug for the remote wire)... it may have been dealer optioned though.

As the system sits right now, the only real advantage I see to an aftermarket HU is sub level control. That alone isnt worth the cost of upgrading.

If there is a plan to upgrade the speakers (and associated amplification) in the near future, then by all means get a better HU. If the stock speakers are going to stay put for a while, just wait and buy a new HU along with new speakers.

ok ok, i guess mazda did have that one protege with the kenwood option with a KDC-X649 type radio in it.

edit: but it was still aftermarket and you could tell!
