Somehow I was wrangled into investigating capturing a signature on a tablet laptop.

With my current lenovo x61, I can "sign" a line on a form but it just turns into regular font, with no proof there was an actual signature.

Is there any software available that captures an actual signature?

We have a PDF version of a Service Report we need customers to sign while we are in the field.

and by "turns into a regular font" you mean it recognizes the letters in the signature and types it out?

    Yes.

We want/need to show the persons actual signature.

Then it sounds like you are using a text input and the tablet 'keyboard' is popping up to take and translate the writing, have you tried using acrobat in annotate mode (pencil tool)?
with the Acrobat Reader I think it only works if you saved the original file with document rights, with Acrobat Pro it'll be there regardless...
Then just save-as the docs as they are sighed (as to not overwrite your original template)
