Right before my bjj club starts, the Capoera club has the mat room. Whenever I come a little bit early I sit outside waiting for them to finish and watch their dancing. Now on the posters they put up around campus they advertise it as a martial art, but when I watch them practice, there is no contact between the 2 people going at each other. It almost looks choreographed. Do any of you guys have any experience in capoera and mind explaining what its all about?

I already know that it is a martial art that is supposed to be disguised as a dance, but from what I've seen I am not sure.

Most capoeira I see looks more choreographed than anything...seems more like a cardio exercise than a martial art.

yeah it was once a martial art but the capoera performed in any US club is not intended as a combat art. as far as I understand the flashy movements of capoera were mostly intended as a distraction so the capoerista could shank you or cut you with a razorblade held between/lashed to the toes.

Jean Silva uses some capoera type kicks in his fights.

Nice. I heard that a bunch of bjj black belts are also masters or at least well versed in capoera. Maybe its some tradition in brazil to do it for fun.
