picked up an XTI about a week or so and i dunno what my first lens upgrade should be...i got the kit lens and while its ok, i know its not great. i'm new to the slr world so i'm not sure what would be a nice step up without spending a fortune...any help would be great appreciated

as a bonus, here are two pics i snapped while on the plane today :hs:

2nd is better composed than the first--the border on both is a bit distracting, though.

I think you'll find that getting yourself acquainted with the camera and learning about exposure will help you more at the beginning than upgrading your equipment.

i started moving away from the preset functions this weekend in favor of messing w/ the manual settings....its a lot to take in coming from a straight p/s

There is a lot to wrap your head around initially. Once you start to get "the feel" for it...and you're ok with the semi-manual and full manual modes I'd say you should start to get creative in terms of what type of glass you have to play with.

    I think my first lens upgrade was a 28-105mm F3.5-4.5 though. :o

Start reading into composition/framing. Not to say that your pictures are bad...but they resemble snapshots rather than thought out and composed photographs. You're on your way though. The exposure is nice..albeit a little under-exposed on the first pic but that may be due to the camera and metering mode more than anything else.

They both look pretty underexposed to me. Moreso the first than the second.
