    Like a 430EX or 550EX, what's the point? :dunno:

I am not saying they are useless, I just don't know what the great benefit to them is. None of my buddies that use SLR's have ever talked to me about them so I'm pretty much in the dark on what function they serve.

If appropriate, it's an investment I'd like to make.

Yeah, I've seen the Steven Spielberg looking dude in the flash section in Flash 101, but it still doesn't really help me understand it.

I want to learn more about low-lighting situations with a separate flash unit. A couple of my buddies are DJ's and their promoter is paying me to walk around their gig Saturday night and snap off shots. Last time I went and took shots in the club they played in I could tell that the flash made the pics look very P&S'ish. Obviously not bad enough to scare away the promoter, but it pissed me off. I don't usually do flash photography so that was a surprise to me.

reasons to invest in one, even a $85 vivatar 283

    More powerful (by a lot
    Faster recharge
off camera lighting > dogshit > on camera lighting
better lighting, being able to bounce light or control it allows for more even illumination

on camera flash is about the worst lighting there is. it doesn't flatter anyone and casts a terrible shadow behind the subject

it often overexposes close subjects and under exposes anything behind the main subject (assuming they could b properly illuminated to begin with

lets just say most 1 series owners aren't crying about not having a built in flash. Even when I had a 10d or d30 I never used the on board.

your on board flash sucks for the reason that it is fixed and shoots straight away, lame. the speedlights cant swivel and tilt up so you can bounce them, making a more natural looking light. also it sits up higher and is not as prone to red eye. there is way more to them, but thats all i feel like getting into.

An off camera flash supports far more functions.

High speed sync, second curtain flash, zooming, more powerful, faster recycling, doesn't drain your camera's batteries, allows you to bounce the flash, can wirelessly trigger other flashes, stroboscopic flash, etc...

    Lots of benefits.

i have a 430ex for this type of stuff. if there's ambient light, drag the shutter a bit (~0''3 or faster usually). i usually leave the flash on auto with 2nd curtain sync.

i've never tried off camera flash in clubs though. :noes:
