the cameras are close in comparison, but i would go with the sony. i own two now (dsc-p10/dsc-f828), and love both. the camera is cheaper, and the 2.5/123,000 pixel lcd compared to canon's 1.5/118,000 pixels.
...but ill be the first to admit im not a camera guru. i just like sony's style and past experiences with their products have been great.

I also paired up the W1 and the S500 (or Ixus 500 it's called over here, or something)..

In the end I went for the W1, records at 30frps, 2.5inch LCD, and takes AA's :)

    It's such a good camera!

Just ordered a stylus 410, it seems like the best camera for the price. Only downside is it uses the more expensive xD memory.

I purchased a Canon S500 and am very happy with it. I had a Konica Kd-500Z which I was also very happy with. As far as the Sony camera, friend of mine bought it; I loved the way it looks, very compact but the display on it was almost invisible in low lighting. Make sure you test that out before you spend $500 on it. I've never seen this issue on any other Sony cameras. That itself was a turn off for me from this particular camera from sony.
