Now this isn't about which is better or anything, but more about which one to get. I can get the SD400 in a package deal with some accessories for $408 + shipping. I can get the SD500 for $488 + shipping. Both come with the same accessory pack. Basically, the SD400 is a 5.0 MP camera and the SD500 is a 7.1 MP camera. Is is worth paying an extra $88 for 2.1 MP or is 7.1 MP overkill for the amateur photographer? I am usually the photographer at family events (picnics, graduations, wedding receptions, summer get-togethers) and I take my camera to sporting events, car shows, evenings out, etc. I considered a digital SLR like a Digital Rebel or something, but I think that is definitely overkill for my needs.

FYI: I'm upgrading from a 2.0 MP Canon Powershop S330.

im thinking about getting the SD400 or SD300. I dont really need a 7mp and the SD400 is MUCH smaller and lighter

You can compare images taken on different cameras at http://www.imaging-resource.com/

A couple months ago I was going to get a Canon but looked through the sample images here and found the Sony cameras have much sharper images. Needless to say, I went with Sony.

I considered the Sony, but I don't like the Memory Sticks. I already had a 1GB SD card, so I didn't want to put out another $100+ for the 1GB Memory Stick Duo or whatever it is.

I love my sd300. I was going to go with the 400 but didn't feel like paying the 100 difference for the extra mp that i wouldn't use.

7.1 is overkill for a point and shoot camera. unless you plan on making full-size prints you should be very happy with the 400
