So I would like to buy myself a christmas present. I am willing to spend about $1300 on myself. I dont just shoot nature but that is where my passion lies and nature is where i spend most of my time. Do I get...

    Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS ($1360)
    or
    Canon 70-200 f/4L IS ($1250)
    or
    Canon 70-200 f/2.8L plus teleconverter ($1380)
    or
    Canon 17-40 f/4L, Canon 70-200 f/4L, and teleconverter ($1390 including double rebate)

I am a photographer of 1 year and shooting with the rebel XT. I know it will be time to upgrade the camera soon too but i think I would like to spend my money on some nice "L" glass first. Thanks in advance for any help.

    what do you shoot?

    the 17-40 + 70-200 4 is probably the best

the samples I've seen of the new 70-200 4 IS are amazing though.

Just to give an idea of what I consider my best photographs over the past year check this out

Its mostly animals but I also have some landscapes, skyscapes, and flowers. My girlfriend is a wildlife biologist so i go out in the field with her and take pictures of whatever catches my eyes. I guess just nature in general, nothing specialized.

Get something faster than a F4. I have a Tamron 2.8, 17-50 and another 2.8 Tamron lens. Then maybe get a 70-200 F4 and maybe have a little money left.

    Even with the TC, I don't think you'd be happy with the reach on a 70-200 + 1.4 TC. I'd suggest the 100-400 or a 300 f/4.0L IS + 1.4x tc

some love the 100 400, others hate it.

The 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS is $1700+. If I were going to spend that kind of money on a lens it wouldn't be one that's almost there.

i've played with the 100-400, didn't like the push pull style zoom, and its slow.
