im going on a trip and need to get a good camera for it. going on a safari in africa so i'll be taking outdoor pics, action shots, distance shots, etc. also, im looking to be able to take shots in low light, though thats prolly just playing with the options on the camera, right? im deciding between these three cameras - if you have any recommendations, please let me know. any thoughts one over the others? thanks

used 20D > all of those if cost is an issue, it's basically the same at the 30D

    if not I'd go 30D

get the rebel xti, or even a used xt. with the money saved [by not buying the 30d, or by going with the used xt] get an EF 70-200 f/4 L. that lens will get you your distance. for the night stuff, get a tripod.

Have you used an SLR before? How much time do you have until the trip? The learning curve is pretty steep.

    Low light = 30D + fast lens

I just got back from an Africa trip... Egypt & Kenya. I did safari's in Kenya... and most of them are during the day (it's more than bright enough), though there are night ones (costs more).

I'd invest in a good long lens to bring... I brought my D80 and my 18-200VR lens worked great... though I wish it was longer for some shots. At 200mm it's at f/5.6, but it was more than enough light. I think I only had issues for a super early safari, so I just used my 50mm 1.8 for a lil bit before throwing the 18-200 on.

So my suggestion is the same as everyone else's... spend less on the camera and more on a good lens.

Day 11 and on are in Kenya.

as for the lens, both the Canon XTI and Nikon D40x will come with two lens:
    18-55MM f/3.5-5.6
    55-200MM f/4.5-5.6 (f/4.0-5.6 for the D40X)

XTI is $779.99 and the D40x is $949.99

If I get the 30D I would need to buy another long distance lens, which would be even more $$

    what you think?

xti ($650 for body or $716 with 18-55)
    50 1.8 II ($80)
70-200 f4 L (used and easy to find for ~400 or new for $560)

That would be a great stater kit that would cover all your bases for around 1300 depending on what you could find used.

how about you get a camera after you've held & shot with all of them and base your decision off of personal experiences rather than what a few sackriders say on an internet forum? the 30d is out of the xti and d40's league so between the two that are comparable, get the one YOU like.
