    Good lenses? :dunno:

They're cheap. Which would you go for? The 1.4 is about 3 times more expensive than the 1.8. Is it worth it?

    Other alternatives?

1.4 is going to give you more bokeh. If you can swing it, do the 1.4, otherwise, the 1.8 will do. the "nifty fifty" is a popular lens.

If price is your issue, 1.8. If quality is thr issue, 1.4. Just like the nikon versions, the canons are plastic and metal from 1.8 to 1.4, correct canonistas?

    correct.

The 1.8 is great if your short on cash. I have it and I do love it, but if i would have had the money i'd go for the 1.4.

i've had both, and if you can swing the 1.4, go with that. the 1.8 is a great lens for $100 but if you sit down and compare the two, there's no one that would choose the 1.8 :o the 1.4 has usm and the focusing of the two is worlds apart. my 1.8 would hunt quite a bit, sometimes even outdoors in good light. the 1.4 was tack sharp and focused much much faster.

only reason i got rid of the 1.4 was to get the 85 1.8 because it suited my shooting style better and i couldn't afford to have them both :o

I have the 50 1.8 and I'm finding that my 28-135 is sharper. I even copied some of the sharpness tests that reviews do.

The 1.8 is a great performer for the price. But as the thread has already answered you.......you get what you pay for.

I love mine. Razor sharp, quick to focus. I'd post up some shots but I'm uploading an album on my work computer.

I bought the 1.4 yesterday. Hated the cheap feel and shitty AF of the 1.8

the 1.8 has crappy focus, the 1.4 is useless at anything lower than f1.8
