I have a digital rebal xti with the kit lense and a nifty 50mm. I've been using this for a little while and now want to step it up a little. I like how fast the 50 is with it's f2.8. I also like the focal range of the kit lense. I don't like how soft and slow the kit lense is. I need a good walk around lense that is fast and has decent focal range. I want to keep it around $500 or less. I have narrowed it down to the Sigma AF 24-70mm f2.8 ex or the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8. If anyone has anymore suggestions feel free to add please.
    Thanks.

I would just save up for a 24-70 f/2.8L, you'll be happy you did.

Or got with a 17-40 f/4L they run around 650 New

I can afford the 24-70, just can't justify the cost of a lense like that. I'm not that serious into it to drop that kind of money.

    Other lense isn't fast enough.

the 17-50. i had the tamron 28-75 and just sold it for the 17-50 because it wasn't anywhere near wide enough on a crop body.

I wouldn't put a cheap filter in front of my lens. Use the hood for protection or invest in a good B+W filter if you really want one.
