i'm looking to get my first flash. i need it because I'm shooting an event at a club / bar next week.

my ultimate goal is to use the flash off-camera with a stand and umbrella (i.e. strobist), but there will be situations where it will be on-camera as per necessity.

So I know that I would eventually need the canon wireless trigger (which is like $225) in order to use the flash remotely.

What are the main differences between the 430 and 580? and what would be the advantage of one over the other based on my requirements?

    thanks!!! i appreciate your help.

    yes

if you want to go wireless pick up the cheapo wireless triggers from www.gadgetinfinity.com they will work fine for what you're doing, and far better then the canon infrared wireless

    thanks for the help.

I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and get the 580ex II.

i can use it on camera with all of the bells and whistles, as well as mount it to a stand with umbrella and connect a pocket wizard via the PC jack (the 580ex doesn't have the PC connection) for manual exposure.

    there goes $450

    :hs:

You can extend the off camera shoe cord too btw.

I cut one up and added about 15' of cable to it.
