if you're going to be mostly using the 200 end, go for a prime

its a great lens, and can be had for a much better price. But don't forget that you'll probably want the tripod collar, which is big $$$, otherwise you will eventually break the lens mount.

The F/2.8 version comes with the collar

why would the lens mount break? I only foresee it breaking if you are holding just the camera itself. as long as you properly support the lens and the body, don't think you would have any problems..

yes, if you're always hald holding it, supporting it by the weight. But you really should use a tripod whenever possible, and if you put it on a tripod without the collar, there is no way to support the weight. Are you planning on supporting the lens with your hand while on a tripod?

I was looking at that for when I grab my cam in january, but I think I've decided to get the 85mm f/1.8 instead.

If you need the zoom then it sounds like a great lens from what I've read, though the collar is gonna cost you another $85 as said earlier (or $115 if you're a stickler for the white colour :o )...will it be fast enough for race photography?
