I'm leaning towards the Sigma after doing a little bit of research on my own. Was wondering if any of you can give me some input if you've had experience with either of these?

The sigma is a great lens on Nikons, don't know much about it on Canons.

I have no experience with the Sigma, but I do have the Canon 50 1.4 and love it.

    From the canon

I was considering both before, but after much reading, I found people saying that the sigma lens (and sigma in general) have quality issues (back and front focusing). Some of them could be perfect, while others need to be sent back to be calibrated. Can anyone confirm this?

ive had both and can tell you by experience that the sigma is worlds better than the canon 50 1.4.

IQ, contrast, color, flare control, AF is faster, bokeh is soooo much better, build quality. However it is heavier and is 77mm.

I'd rather have a heavier / more subsantial lens anyway.. the canon 50 1.4 looks tiny and cheap

Agree with turbodude, the sigma is an awesome lens and better than both the canon/nikon 50 1.4's. It's pretty large though, and the quality control can be spotty on the sigmas, but they are good about recalibrating the lenses so you'll eventually get it right if you buy one.

i don't mind the size/weight. if anything i like it when my lenses have a little bit of weight to them. i also like the large element on the sigma (77mm? i think)

i also keep reading that canon's 50 1.4 is a really old design and the sigma has all the features the canon should have

i'm pretty set on the sigma now

    like what?

    The canon 1.4 is amazing

as far as sigma goes, I have a 30 and a fish eye from them, and they are both top notch!

I've had 3 Canon 50/1.4's ended up selling the last one for my Sigma 50mm. The Sigma is light years better if you can get a good copy.
