I probably wouldn't buy the 50D right now. The xxD series is on a 1 year cycle now so the 60D is set to be released later in the year. This will likely add video and hopefully some improvements to the sensor to reduce high ISO noise. If you are going Canon, I think the better option is to try to find a used 40D (~$650) and wait for the 60D.

I've got the 50d, i like it, but i'm disappointed in it's High ISO applications. It's noisy as fuck at 6400 (expanded H1) and completely useless at 12,800 (expanded H2: Thrown in for the fags in marketing) 3200 gets some noise, but is workable. The AF is better than my rebel, but that's my only basis of comparison. Build quality is good, but the same with the 40D. It's custom functions are good, white balance is great, particularly if you shoot in RAW, and make whatever tweaks you like. It's a good camera, i really enjoy using mine, but with the amount of night time shooting i do, i regret not going after the 40D. As Mutombo mentioned, the 60D is about to release, so it might be better for you to wait for that to come out, and see how it stacks up against the 40/50D, and weather or not it's worth the price difference. expect around 2k for a new 60d when it hits the market....

Can't go wrong with the 5d, though the 5d2 has a truly stellar ISO performance. Clean @ 6400. :eek3:
