Ive been playing around with my gf's aunts 40D. Learning how to do everything on that basically before I go out and buy one. From day 1 when I started to mess with it, and to today..About a month, I think ive come a long way. I'll have to upload pictures for you guys to C&C.

Anyway, when I buy it, what kind of lense(s) should I look to buy? I have used the Canon 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS lens and 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. Would you say those are good started lenses?

For starter you need all around general lens. 70-300 isn't one, so is the macro.

Just get the kit lens to learn on, then you will be able to make MUCH better decision on what kind of lens to invest on.

28-135 USM IS is a excellent all around lens. Very easy to walk around with.

of those two I'd pick the 17-85, 28mm isn't very wide on a crop body

yeah i just got a 40d with the 28-135 its a sweet lens but im not on the hunt fora nice wide angle ... i wil probably end up with a tamron 17-50 or something like that although i hear alright things about the canon 17-85.... decisions decisions...

17-85 is pretty middle of the road, vastly better then the 18-55, but it's definitely no L

I have one, but I would like to upgrade it to the 17-55IS or tamron 17-50 2.8 eventually :o

Speaking of L lenses....I shot a test in our studio yesterday with our 30D and my new 17-40mm f/4 L lens vs. the 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. I shot a resolution chart with both lenses wide open and stopped down to f/22. There is virtually no difference in sharpness between the two.

However, the kicker is that the tests were made on a 30D instead of a full frame camera like the 5D. I'm willing to bet that I would see a difference if I did the same test with a 5D.
