    Hey guys,

    I have a 40D with the kit 28-1XXmm, 50mm 1.4, and a tokina 12-24mm.

I'd like a new baddass "general" lens and am looking at the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS and the 24-70 2.8L.

Anyone have any suggestions or experiences with either?

24-70, esp. since you have the 12-24

    Thanks for the quick replies...

Does "IS" really work, or more of a gimmick?

It works, however I find it more useful for the longer focal lengths. I don't really miss it on my 24-70L, but it would definitely make that lens perfect (except for the size maybe).

24-70 in case you go FF you have that, I don't know if the 17-55 is a cropped lens (I know it is with Nikon).

the 17-55 2.8 is an amazing lens and the glass is L quality (sans the ef-s mount). it's not a dainty lens lens and though not as big as the 24-70, is still fairly large

the IS function at that focal length is of debatable value, but I think every bit helps

i love my 17-55, it's tack sharp. It's an excellent walk around lens.
