Both lenses get great reviews. I know the L is $250 more than the Tamron, and I dont mind paying the difference if its worth it. Going to be used indoor/outdoor mix. What does OT think? Should I be looking at another lens besides these two?

Tamron gets my vote. Fast, sharp, well built. Does not have USM so it's louder than the canon but it's not bad.

seriously, why do people care about how loud the focus is?

shoot a press conference or meeting with a loud focusing lens and you'll understand.

Loud focusing doesn't sound loud until you need to be quiet.

theres more to it than its audible level, like focus speed. thats the killer for me, but other than that they're both great.

i'm really looking to replace the 28-135. 17-50 will overlap the 10-22, but as you know, they are in 2 different leagues.

I will be getting a long lens shortly (thinking about the 70-200 F/4 L). I need to pick up a few more flashes first.

the 28-135 is pretty shitty. But its decent for portraits since its soft.

Ohhh yeah, and I'd recomend the 17-50. It's a stop faster and costs less, plus has a smaller filter size and is sharper (though some will probably argue with me on this).

Buy it if you think you'll stick with 1.6 crop for a while. It's nice to be able to shoot at 17mm 2.8.

I own the Tamron 17-50 for Nikon -- I'd go for the Canon for durability. I've never held a Canon lense before, but I assume it's more durable then the Tamron. I've sent mine in 2x for warranty work now...

I've had the 17-40 for over 3 years now and love it. L glass doesn't lose its value, extremely well built lens, and my copy of it is very sharp.

love my 17-40. but the winning point for me was that it takes 77mm filters, same as the rest of my stuff.

love the canon, but a step down filter is all thats needed to use a 77 on it.
