tell me the good and the ugly....
it's nicknamed the "dust pump" for a reason
sweet, cant wait!
if it were me id buy the 100 macro, and add a teleconvertor. and i already have a 500 reflex
good: decently sharp. getting to 400mm isnt prohibitively expensive.
bad: its nickname as the "dustpump" is true. everyone i've know that owned one ended up selling it cause of the constant dust its sucked in. the 100-400 is one of the several L lenses that are not weathersealed. push pull zoom action takes a bit getting used to.
see, i have read these reviews as well.
some people say dust isn't a factor, others say it is...
one of the reviewers said he had the lens for 3 years and dust wasn't an issue for him...
would rather buy a 400 5.6L
i heard it called the dust trombone, and i chuckle every time i think of that
where is teh push/ pull gif. I know someones got it
i rented the 100-400 for a trip to s.a., and absolutely loved the lens.
but, i ended up using it at 400x probably 95% of the time. i probably would have been better off with a prime ... or even rent the 400 2.8.
people WILL stare at you when it's fully extended, too. it's a fucking HUUUUUUUUUUGE lens
im only speaking from my friends experiences who owned and actually used the 100-400 in the field. they cursed it cause they'd have to keep sending it out to get cleaned. after once of twice, you kinda get sick of not having a lens.
and i appreciate it, thats why i started the thread.
but it really is a tough one...i searched POTN and it was almost a 50 50 split....
then again, why wouldn't canon think about the dust issue?
I think every lens has its ups and downs. I've heard numerous reviews about it being a dust pump....like already mentioned. I've rented that lens probably 10 times now (and have one coming Friday for AMA Superbikes this weekend)......and I like it alot.
Once you figured out the push/pull and how to control it, you will like it too. I'd suggest renting one for obvious reasons.
Here is a sample shot that I took a couple years ago....
