even if you know it's a template site, is it really THAT bad? does the site owner lose credibility if he uses a template even if the information is laid out in an organized, logical manor?

is there any advantage to custom designing everything from scratch?

I usually can, but it doesn't bother me. It's usually most obvious when the site doesn't have the proper flow it would have if it was built ground up, it's just kind of "made-to-fit" the template.

But I usually have no reason to go to such sites for more than a few seconds.

I see no problem with it if it gets the job done. Some sites don't NEED a fancy custom-made layout and graphics.. they just want to provide the content to a specific group who don't care about the look of it.
