Can you lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time?

Sounds stupid right? A personal trainer at my gym told me that you cant get bigger while you're cutting :hsugh:. I wieght ~215 @ 5'11, 18% body fat

Oh, I get like 200 grams of protine a day and at least 2000 calories. I do alot more cardio now than I ever did, working out 3 days a week, and cut alot of cals out of my diet.

I have a really hard time getting bigger anyway, so for me it's not really an option, but I've never really tried it either. I either go lighter with a ton of reps and cardio 4 to 5 times a week or extrememly heavy, low reps and cardio 2 or 3 times a week.

maybe VERY VERY VERY SLOWLY, but if over the course of a year you bulked for 9 and cut for 3 you would be huge compared to eating slightly under maintenance for a year

To be fair I think a good majority of this place has a skewed view on bulking and cutting. Most of the people here eat like shit when they bulk and don't do a damn bit of cardio, but eat next to nothing and run their asses off while they cut.

With the right body type you could put on a lot of lean mass by eating right and doing your cardio with lifting.

I had a friend who went from 170lbs at 6'2 to 220lbs in like 6 months and up to 210lbs was actually leaner then he was at 170lbs. The last 10lbs though he wasn't as lean as at 210lbs but was definitely still around 7-8%.

I agree with Trance though within limits. I think most people around 5'10" if they were average skinny fat at 140lbs could probably get bigger and leaner at the same time at least up to 160lbs. After that the heavier they get, the less likely.

This was my exact situation.... I wasn't skinny/fat... but was 130-40, and got up to ~160 adding lean muscle mass and no fat...

isn't the question about losing "fat" not "weight"

then wouldn't all you have to do is clean bulk?

i bet if i clean bulked and changed nothing else, i would lose fat.

Clean bulking though means calories above maintenance.
Why would you lose fat, if say you were eating 4000 calories from just chicken breasts and salad?
I think eating a certain ratio of macros could decrease the amount of fat gained when 'bulking' but again... only up to a point.

for the last 2 months i've been on a very dirty bulk and have hardly gained any fat at all, while gaining almost 10 or 15 lbs of muscle. thats just my body type, its next to impossible for me to gain fat thats why im eating like such shit cause it helps me gain muscle and doesnt affect my fat %.

i'm going tomorrow to get my body fat measured. my roommate thinks im at 7 or 8%, i think somewhere near 10 or 12

but as to the question at hand, i dont think you can be cutting and see any significant gains in muscle mass, the nutrient intake just isnt there.
