Say I wanted a Mossberg for "home protection" but didn't want to wake the neighbors in the event of a robbery; Would there be a way for me to silence the blast of the gun? Of course this is strictly for home protection and has nothing to do with armed robbery.

Uh....I don't think you can even if you tried using slug rounds. You'd have to make a specific barrel for every pellet that you fire to achieve some level of suppression of noise.

But the barrels of sniper rifles can be fitted with them for more than 1 shot. Wouldn't it be the same priciple?

nope. A rifle is a very different animal then a shotgun.

Shotgun suppressors do exist, people. They're largely ineffective as compared to other suppressors, due to the large bore size and excess space around the projectiles that allows sound to still escape. You also have to have a VERY effective choke on the shotgun barrel to prevent baffle strikes.

why not get a nice pistol instead of a shotgun for home defense? Just out of curiosity since the shotty will do a buttload of periferal damage, and i would think a pistol woul be a bit easier to handle and be more effective?

a shotgun has a lot more stopping power than a handgun, and doesn't have overpenetration problems depending on what bore size/shells/walls/etc you have

a shotgun is a great home-defense weapon... And the shotty has that "fear-factor" when you hear the "cha-clunk".

If you are counting on the noise of the action to scare someone away, you have acted too late.

As soon as you grabbed the gun, it should have either had one in the chamber already, or it should be getting stoked as you are withdrawing it from its hiding place.

Stupidest question ever. Why would someone needed silencer on a shotgun? To splash a cat into pieces quietly?

Why would someone need a shotgun? We don't need any of the weapons in this sub-forum, every (personal use) weapons owner here has one because he/she wants it. I want a quiet Mossberg. :)

And I wouldn't say it was a stupid question, because as already posted in this thread they do exist.

if i ever have to use any of my home defense weapons, waking the neighbors is of zero concern to me! if i have to use one of my home defense weapons, my two and only concerns are....1. protecting my self and family and 2. eliminating the threat to self and family! if i have to wake a neighbor to do either, so be it.

What the box of truth fails to take into account, though, is the space between walls and between the wall construction itself. It's a flawed design, even if it's fun.

There. Scroll down to "Barriers and Structures." That's from an official FBI test, not some backyard bullshit test.
