My business partner and I are trying to figure out the best route to go for our hosting. We are having problems with our current host and want to look at other options.

We are thinking about having the server in our office but neither one of us knows how to maintain it or get it running. We would pay someone to come in and set it up for us and possibly maintain it on a weekly or monthly basis.

The other option is to find a good host that will offer us a dedicated server or static IP address.

What are the pros and cons of each?

    Thanks

Dont have a server in your office, you are not a datacenter.

    get a managed dedicated box.

. or a managed VPS even depending on your needs

check out www.liquidweb.com and talk to their online chat..pretty helpful and their managed support is pretty good. they're a little pricey but worth it IMO.

cons of having server in your office:

    - no redundancy
    - you dont know what you're doing so hiring someone would probably be more expensive in the end
    - won't have 24/7 support in case something happens to the server
    - hardware fails it cant be replaced as fast
    - slower connection (most likely compared to a datacenter)

pro of going with liquidweb (or other company, i have used LW thats why i recommend them, wish i get referral commission..that'd be nice)

    - they know what they're doing
    - 24/7 support with fast and polite response (most of the time)
    - i think dedicated costs like 160 or something a month, dont remember, pricey than others but avoiding headaches is always nice
    - basically opposite of the cons mentioned above is what you get with a managed provider

+1 on liquid web, they are great. I had to email them once at 4 in the morning, and I got a response 10 minutes later. The best part is that you don't need to know shit when it comes to the server. All you have to do is ask and they are on top of it.

I am using hostgator and am pretty happy. A home server is suicide..

check the dedicated server section at webhostingtalk.com before making a decision. also depending on what you're doing, a VPS might be a better option (and considerably cheaper).

Don't run your own dedicated server in your office. Go with a reliable host that manages your server. Basically, I agree with everyone above. I recommend the following hosts.

    1. The Planet
    2. Text Drive
    3. A Small Orange

Softlayer always have specials going and they're very helpful, when picking hosts i'm always sure to go with the ones who aren't going to die out and softlayer's one of the top in the business.

I have a dedicated server with server beach and a block of ip space. I have been using them for about 5 years I guess. In that time, the server was hacked a couple times (phpnuke bad!) and is the only time my server has so much as dropped a packet.
