A&P can someone recommend a relatively cheap (under $600) carbon fiber tripod & head?

my birthday is in a few weeks, and i thought maybe i could ask for a tripod as a 'group gift" from my woman/parents/sister.

i'd like carbon fiber so i dont have any issues carrying it on an airplane (which i've heard can/will happen with a metal one)

it should fold up small for packing, and i would like the legs to go near-horizontal (90-degrees?). I would also like the center column to be removable so i can put it in sideways (i've seen manfrotto's that do this).

i know some about tripods, but don't know shit about heads.

    :dunno:

they're nice to have to hang sandbags, or something else to weigh your tripod down in windy conditions.

14 pages of CF tripods at B&H. Induro are suppose to be the new hotness.

    lots from Bogen and Giottos

RRS is crazy expensive for what i need/want. i don't make $$ off of my shit, so it's pretty tough spending that kind of bling on something i won't use a lot.

The only reason for CF is security at the airport? b/c that really isnt any lighter than mine and only a little bit smaller. A metal tripod in a checked bag should be no problem I would think. I like that head wish I got that instead of the 486RC2 :hs:

    :o

never been a big pod fan. I spent $300 on my legs and have 3 heads, and hate the legs and all but one head.

If I get another, I' going with the bassalt ones :hs:

why the 488 over the 486?

i'd like to carry it on, not put it in my checked bag.

but now i'm wondering if i'd ever really use it at all. i'm going to S. Africa later this year, and i'm thinking i might want a monopod for there. then i'm wondering if i'd ever even use that at all.

ugh. probably not a smart purchase for me, i don't think. i bought a cheapo from BB when i got my XTi, and i've used it maybe twice.

you've probably seen my travel pics a million times, but I don't usually pack a pod. very few times I'd want it, and not worth the extra weight carrying it around all day for me anyways.

even in longer exposures, there things you can do to help, like leaning against a tree:

sure it could be sharper, but IMO it adds to the feel and isn't worth the extra weight and effort :o

488 is nicer b/c its got 2 knobs for adjustment (tilt & pan) the 486 only has the 1 knob its kinda a pain in the ass sometimes :hs: A tripod would be a pain to lug around all day traveling, I've been thinking about getting a monopod for that purpose we're going to greece soon I really don't see myself carrying a tripod all day long for 7 days

I have the 488 because I wanted the panning feature, and I already have a monopod using the same quick release plates.

I had a POS one, and never used or hated using it for many reasons. It was aluminum, and cold on the hands while carrying it. It took forever to setup with the twist screws. It was a pan/tilt head :o It was light and not sturdy at all.

When I got my new one, it was everything the other one wasn't. I use it on every shot that allows it. It's a great feeling looking through your photos from the day and none of them being blurry. Now they just suck for other reasons :o
