Noone in my family owns a gun :hs:. Not my dad, grandpa, or even a crazy uncle. I live in MI and I want to hunt deer. Getting a permit and such isn't that big of a deal, but where do I go? Should I go with someone? Any reading material I should cover? Rifle or shotgun?

I'm pretty much shooting in the dark here. The only people I know that hunt is one guy at work who has a 870 but I don't think he really knows what he's doing either, and my girlfriend's sister's ex-husband but he's a good drive away from where I live. :dunno:

goto hunters education first, most places require that for a license.

Yeah take the basic hunting class you'll learn a lot. If you get fined by the game warden you'll be wishing you did.

I like hunting small game the best with my shot gun anyway. No waiting around in a blind all day for a deer. Walk around and take out some rabbits or squirrels while they are on the move.

Werd, I just drive to a few dairies about 10-15 minutes each from me and go shooting there. Closest one is best for pigeons, and one about 15min away we can kill over 20-30 rabbits a day  Then there are still two other dairies to shoot at if wanting to drive a little further.

Much better than waiting for a deer or two.

In Texas we'll drive all the way across the state to go deer hunting, I think you can handle part way across MI. Go make a weekend of it.

The first deer you kill you must drink its blood.

Definitely take this, it is usually taught by a game warden.

This will have basic information about safety, methods of taking game (bow, shotgun, rifle), seasons, etc.

If you have any questions I am sure that the game wardens or instructors will be more than happy to answer any specific questions you might have.

This is Michigan's dept of natural resources hunter education page. Here you can find where classes are, when they are offered.

If you any other hunting questions just ask.

I got into hunting the easy way - no need to sneak around in the underbrush, wait around for hours on end in a deer stand, or even avoid detection by your prey.

Just load up your sawed-off shotgun with some slugs and head out to farm country where there's plenty of game just standing around that just might walk on up to you - especially if you're wearing overalls and carrying a feed bucket. Let's face it, you don't want venison, you want steak that's easily quartered up with a chainsaw while your hunting buddy keeps the engine running and an eye out for those self-described "game wardens" that think they "own" the game.

Several years growing up, I earned extra money working for a relatives slaughter and farm, I've been around plenty of bulls.

I'm hoping I'm just mis reading you, because I hope you know better than to take anything around here too serious.
