when i power up my computer, it usually runs really quite,
but then about an hour later, it'll start making a loud "whirring" noise like something is spinning really fast.
it'll last for about a minute, then stop for a few minutes, then start up again.
someone at work said that it mite be the cooling fan(s).
    should i replace them?

    any help would be appreciated.

could very well be a fan. Get a can of compressed air and make sure they're not clogged.

just open up your case when the noise occurs to see what is causing it

oem video card fans are notorious for making that noise.

Definitely sounds like a fan to me. Hard drives tend to make a zinging sound or a clicking sound when they're about to die.

Make sure you check the CPU fan if you have one. My parents old compute had some much crap it sounded like a coffee grinder.
