my dad wants me to pick up a 22 to keep at their beach house for the purpose of killing off the skyrocketing raccoon population. I have found this to be a great time to start the build I've wanted to do for a while now. what should i be looking at in terms of the gun, and then all the parts that will end up going into it? thanks for help :wavey:

How far will you be shooting?

  3. If you want to modify it buy a cheap used one, or the cheapest new one you can find. There are 11ty billion aftermarket parts, so before we start recommending parts you'll have to tell us a little more about your vision for this gun (do you want something super accurate at 50 yards, or are you looking for a lightweight build for example.)

There are plenty of threads, but vbulletin config here doesn't recognize 10/22 as a legitimate search term.

    Easy...

Buy the cheapest receiver and trigger group that you can find. You will likely be throwing away the barrel and stock, so if you buy a complete gun factor that in (though you can probably sell the take off stuff for like $35-40).

    Then go shopping.

    No.

Cheap was referring to the cheapest 10/22 action/trigger group you can find.

I have a Plinkster.... It sits in the back of my "shit guns" pile. Someone gave it to me, and it tried to kill me (fires outta battery). Now that you reminded me of it, I'll probably set fire to it this weekend in a sacrificial offering.

A Marlin 60 can be had in the $75 range around here..... I'd rock one of those if I was attempting high volume raccoon pursuits on the cheap. Top with a cheapy red dot and go killin'.

Try and find an older used 10/22 as the new ones have replaced some of the metal components with plastic

Whatever you do, replace the extractor with an aftermarket one. The stock one sucks cock.

  13. I have a 12+ year old 10/22 with the original extractor. It is super reliable. Proper cleaning and good ammo is the key to .22 reliability.

I would end up wanting to turn it into a plinking gun when i'm finished exterminating the raccoons. I would really want something that was dead on from 100yrds are less. so are there any other problems with buying a new model? i'm going to try to call all the gun stores around here and find a used one first.

meh it was cheap and makes target shooting, which is all i do with it, look like its 4 feet away from you when its 100yards. If i used it to hunt squirrels or something yeah since target acquisition would be ridiculous on something moving.
