i have a 3.0 ghz P4, and i figure thats pretty good for now, but i see these new dualcores at like 2.4 ghz. even tho theyre a "lesser" speed, are they still faster? :o just want to know, thanks. i might be in the market for one sometime soon

The Core 2 Duo, in addition to having two processing cores, is a much better design than the P4 so it does more per clock tick. A 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo will destroy a P4 3.0.

Core 2 Duo is almost like having two processors on one chip. This means on processor will keep busy running the OS, playing music, and surfing a few web sites. The second processor is entirely free to run your mmorpg.

This isn't really how it works but it's the best analogy you're going to get without spending a few hours learning all the details.

Just to add, I had a 3.2e before going to the e6400. The e6400 does a better job at video encoding and I can do other things while it's working and there has been zero lag in either process.

    Heh, another thing to add...
Previously, I had a P4 3.6 (560) CPU with an Intel 925 motherboard, and I rebuilt my computer with a Core2Duo 2.4 (6600) and an Intel 975 motherboard. The C2D TOTALLY blows away the P4.

I went from a P4 533 Mhz CPU (meaning no hyperthreading) desktop to a core 2 duo (2.0 Ghz) in a laptop and I'm blown away by the performance. My laptop is my new gaming rig. I can run WOW at full graphics, have WinAmp streaming my music in the background, have Ventrillo running, open up Firefox (to check thottbot) and run Outlook all at the same time and I don't notice any lag or slowdown in my machine.

These core 2 duos rox. It also helps that I have 2 gigs of ram.

Just to add another testimonial, I used to run a P4 HT 3.0GHz machine and was incapable of playing 1920x796(HD) H.264 video. Now that I have a 2.4 GHz Core2 Duo (E6600), I can play this movie with less than half my processor load even during the most busy scenes (far less for less active scenes)...
