I know about prices but it seems to be the caliber everyone goes for for rifles and ARs. I saw some casings and slugs at the gun show yesterday and they didn't strike me as anything special.

    What gives? :dunno:

One of the most popular rifle rounds, virtually identical to the 5.56NATO, accurate, relatively low-cost, etc...

It is the common Caliber for most AR and All M-16s. If you get a .223 AR. you can always get different uppers and mags

You can buy AP rounds, and sure 5.56 will go through lower level vests but it's not considered AP.

Most all centerfire rifle rounds will penetrate soft armor. Hard armor is a different story.

It's the standard ammo right now with AR15's which seems to be the most popular rifle. I like 7.62X39 for the better knock down power and better price. Other calibers are better like 6.5 grendel but that hasn't been adopted by any major military that I know of yet.

5.56/.223 is popular because of the massive destruction to tissue it does. a 5.56 bullet will do hands-down more damage than a 7.62 will. The key is that as soon as the 5.56 hits the target, it turns on end and fucks up all kinds of shit inside. This is why the military uses it for its primary round.

Read more, there is really nothing in that post that is accurate. I suggest firearmstactical.com and tacticalforums.com to find lots of good terminal ballistics information.

You mean 5.56 NATO doesn't yaw and keyhole as soon as it leaves the barrel? Fuck that shit. I'm switching over to .50 BMG.

Wow, didn't expect tempers to flair. I just wanted to know why everyone gravitates to .223 ammo.
