We had a storm a couple of weeks ago, and it somehow messed up my computer. It wouldn't come on at all, but after a bit of messing around, I got it to come back. The only problem is my modem seems dead. I tried it in another PCI slot, and also nothing, even after completely uninstalling. The computer never sees new hardware. I tried another modem I had around, and when I connect it, I get no signal to my monitor when I turn everything on. Is my motherboard fried?

Your title is misleading. Yes, your mobo can be fried. rj11 telephony modems are very sensitive to lighting storms as well, so it may be fried as well.

I figured the modem was fried, but if my motherboard was dead, wouldn't it be completely dead? I can use the computer for everything else.

most likely the modem is just dead

put a working pci card in the slot you think is not working

    (no guarentee's though)

get a new mobo = best bet

    modem is fried, almost guarenteed
you've already tried anohter card in a different slot and got nada from the system

oh yeah, and when you get a new mobo, get a battery backup and a NEW power strip too
those strips do NOT last forever, they'll let power through indefinetly, but any surge protection goes away
