So, lets say I know someone that is getting an iPhone legit. (Current ATT user, upgrading, all legit) If he were to buy his iPhone for 299 and get the contract and everything, would he be able to buy another iPhone without a contract so I could use it on my own network?

This is simply a question of how much it would cost him to buy a second iphone without a contract, not unlocking or jailbreaking.

    Thanks.

What if you know someone who can upgrade but doesnt want or care for the iphone? Can they upgrade, give the phone to a friend who does, and tell ATT that the phone broke or whatever reason and switch the plan back to their normal "non-iphone" plan? Or will there be a penalty for that as well?

they aren't limited to 1 per person. they can buy as many as they want to put on the family plan, as long as their credit allows it.

what about if you sign up for a contract, then cancel it within 3 days or something. isn't there a small period of time you have to cancel the contract without incurring a fee?

I believe you have the option to return the phone for "Buyer's Remorse" and without being charged with in a certain period of time, however you have to return the phone

    <30 days = return phone
    > 30 = msrp + monthly fee + data + etf
