I will soon have a laptop with XP, can i add windows 98 as dual-boot?

Id like XP to be the first OS, and 98 the second

Yes, but you'll need free partition space, and you will need to make that partition active. Once you've installed it, you just need to repair the installation (boot from xp CD). It will setup the boot.ini and ntldr files for you (on your FAT32 partition)

Will i need software to do the partition?

And, if you can, go more in-depth.

    Details on the laptop: link

Just curious, but why do you need 98?

You will need Partition Magic or something like it if you have used up all of you available space on your laptop (most likely). Alternatively you can back up your data and start from scratch (in which case I would suggest you install 98 then XP but WITHOUT the upgrade)

For gaming, or making the most out of low spec games.

Ive tried running games on my current XP machine and it keeps stopping me with a message: 'This game does not support NT'

    Can you help me out

Right click the exe -> Properties -> Compatibility tab. Try and run it in 98 mode and see what happens. I don't know if this will solve your problem, but it's worth a chance. What games are you playin?

I dont have my games with me, but i will try that.

I tried carmageddon, and NFS3. It also ran GTA3 but at 1-2fps.

You're going to have the same problem regardless of which one you install. Go look for them on the internet before you start

With sony XP install/recovery disks it has the drivers built in to the XP version. If i just go out and buy 98, chances are something wont work.

compiledmonkey: I found NFS3, so im going to try that out now.

Ok, i tried out NFS4, that worked without hassle on XP, so i didnt have to use that run in 98 mode.

I'll try and find another game that comes up witht the NT incompatibility

Actually, forget all that crap i posted above ^

All i need to know is:

Will using XP's 'run as 98 mode' always work? Or is it not too reliable?

Hm, I've never actually done an install of 98, but if I remember correctly the reason for that is that when I tried it wanted to create its own partition the full size of the drive and wouldn't let me leave my Linux partition along side it. I dunno, maybe it's different with Windows partitions.

There are definately some things that don't work in 98 mode. I would wait until you uncover and old but priceless game that requires you to question that

I have two machines that I use constantly, a laptop and a tower, both run XP. I dusted out some old games when I got my laptop. Vampire: The Masquerade is the only one I can really remember. When I installed it it gave me that same error, and I tried that compatability trick and it still didn't work. But it worked without having to change anything when I installed it on my tower. Never did figure out why. :sad2:
