Thinking about grabbing one in the next month or two, whenever I find one that seems mechanically sound.

Can anyone give me some advice for the search? Anything to look for? Common probs?

Are they solid trucks? They have to be cheap as hell to work on...

Tell me what you know :x:

the trannys aren't the greatest, but I personally have a soft spot for em. I think they're great trucks.

$5,400 seems a bit steap, tho.

I always liked how they looked, but the Bronco was more ftw because of the removable top.

Should be the same as any GM pickup, the 4L60E is going to burn up by 150k.

I have a friend with one, and he says it's a lot of maintenance. He's on his 3rd tranny and has car has 80k miles. IMO it's a good truck, though

Not so much problems as just life expectancy. I think I paid $2300 for a rebuilt one with a few upgrades and install.

these are good strong trucks, i have a 95 silverado with almost 200,000 miles and it still runs strong, no problems, just watch for the tranny mine has never had a problem but my buddies went through 3 but he beat the hell out of that truck and power steering pump is also a weak point but if you run atf in the power steering it keeps everything alot cooler and you will have no issues whatsoever.

    I'd stay away from them

I had a 96 cost me a ton, of course right after the 3 yr warranty.

Left a bad taste with me and GM trucks

Lot's of problems with the transmission,

Personally I would go with something different. I have a very strong love hate relationship with mine. Coming back from West Yellowstone and as soon as I get back into CA, the motor blows. This is about 4-5k after purchasing at ~63k. Pulled motor, hopup motor to 383, install. Then boom goes the tranny but that was expected. $2000 later I have a built transmission to hold the power and torque.

Other than that I now have some electrical problems every now and then.
Oh and pic is in my AV.

Edit: But it is pretty quick now for its weight. I can chirp the 35s when going into second on occasions.

I just sold my 1999 tahoe yesterday (4dr sorry) with 156k on it. At roughly 80k I had an intake gasket let go but I caught it early enough. Other than that I only had the resistor for the fan/blower motor go and a starter. It was maintained and taken care of. As any vehicle find one thats been taken care of and it will last you just fine

My folks had a '96 K1500 that started to nickle and dime them at 130,000 miles.

I had a 99 4 door 4x4 that treated me right to 120k when i sold it. Ran like a trooper but like everyone has mentioned, the trans was starting to show its age and had developed a leak (we think the original owner beat on it a bit). Ours we figured must have come from a leaking gasket but about when it started leaking, it started slipping every once in a while so we knew its time was slowly coming to an end. Plus the arizona summer tends to kill transmissions (as a side note, get a trans cooler installed, you will be glad you did) To keep the trans in shape, get a flush and filter every year and you should be just fine.

Beyond that, you will love your Tahoe. They run really strong and can tow just about anything without breaking a sweat (took our 25' bayliner cabin cruiser around town, no problem).
